It doesn’t appear that it is possible to turn off the stop/start feature in my 2018 Cruze. I even consulted the manual:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Makes no reference to turning off the stop/start, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

Kinja'd!!!

This button is absent in my 2019.

!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , looks like the ability to disable the stop/start was added for the 2019 model year:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Kinja'd!!!

Car in question is my rental Cruze.

I read several GM cars these days don’t allow that option. Reviewers were bitching about it in the Regal GS, for example.

I don't believe that button exists.

Hmm, well that would be unfortunate. This is out of the 2019 US/Canada manual. Don’t know if earlier models were different, though it would seem to make sense that they would be similar .

I guess it’s possible that the rental spec omits features to save a few cents.

2017 manual indeed does not reference this button. Guess saved them 5 cents of buttons back then.

Put car in L, hit the ‘+’ until it’s in 6 so it can use all six gears.

Put it in park. At every stop.

I think putting it in neutral would be more effective.

But putting it in park is more unnecessary and arbitrary and in the spirit of GM.

Pause with the lever in reverse to fuck with the people behind you. Just like GM fucks with us all  with their “approach” reverse lights.

Seems like an obvious feature, and frankly one that becomes less necessary over time (as people become more likely to have used and become comfortable with start/stop).

I would be fine with it if it was more seamless , maybe it’s just me, but it feels abrupt. Hilariously , my M3 has stop/start. Luckily, that can be disabled.

On heavier cars where it doesn’t shake you every time it stops and start’s it’s actually okay. It was fine on a Macan and the 528xi, the two I’ve been in, and I hate it in my F30 and the CR-Z . Although I got used to it since I can control the stopping and starting using my clutch. If I hold my clutch in it won’t shut off.

Hey, GM sales consultant here! There is a way around it. Unfortunately, it’s a bit frustrating but I find it less frustrating than start/stop. Instead of putting the car into D(rive)  pull all the way down to L and go up to L6, this allows the transmission to use all 6 gears, and will disengage start/stop.

I had a SEAT Alhambra diesel rental van once with the annoying start/stop. It really was dangerous as the engine took time to start and spool up to get the thing moving in traffic. I figured out that if I held the engine revs with the accelerator against the brake, it wouldn’t shut off. Sure, you’re unnecessarily abusing the torque converter , but it’s a rental.
